– For goods that are worth $1,000 or less, there are at\u00a0the present time no duties, taxes or charges to pay\u00a0(however see below*).<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n – For goods that are worth more than $1,000, you are\u00a0generally required to fill out a special form called an\u00a0Import Declaration, and pay duties, taxes and charges.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n – You will need to pay duties and taxes on some goods\u00a0(like tobacco or alcohol) regardless of their value.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n – Certain types of goods are not allowed to be brought\u00a0into Australia, such as firearms, or else need special\u00a0permits.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n For more information:<\/p>\n In order for the commutation request to be valid under\u00a0the ATO\u2019s guidelines, it must not be subject to the\u00a0discretion of the fund\u2019s trustee or a member at a later\u00a0date. Likewise, the commutation request must not be\u00a0dependent on certain events occurring in the future.<\/p>\n Items that you buy over the internet from an overseas\u00a0source are generally required to abide by the same\u00a0rules and screening processes that apply to any other\u00a0\u201cimport\u201d. Also the usual duties or taxes should apply. Customs duties are regulated by the Department of\u00a0Home Affairs (a recently formed body from December\u00a02017, which now oversees the Australian Customs\u00a0Service as well as Immigration and Border Protection).<\/p>\n The Department of Home Affairs may screen, x-ray or\u00a0examine your goods just like any other imported items\u00a0to make sure the goods are allowed into Australia.
