How to Apply Director Identification Number

As part of the Modernising Business Registers Program (The MBR Program), The Director is introduced and Starting from November 2021, all directors are able to register their unique 15-digit identifier number to prevent the use of false or fraudulent director identities.

Three ways to apply for Director ID

All directors need to apply for their own director ID.

• Apply using myGovID
• Apply via phone
• Apply via paper form

The fastest way to do this is to apply online. If you need to apply via paper form or phone, please contact us for help or direct contact Australia Business Registry Services.

Step 1 – Set up myGovID

You will need a standard or strong identity strength myGovID to apply for your director ID online.

If you:

• don’t have a myGovID, you can find information on how to download the app at How to set up myGovID

OR

• have a myGovID, you don’t need to do anything until November when you can apply for your director ID.

Note: myGovID is different from myGov you use to access your personal ATO Portal, Centre Link etc..

Step 2 – Gather your documents

You will need to have some information the ATO knows about you when you apply for your director ID:

• tax file number (TFN)
• residential address as held by the ATO
• answer two questions based on information from the following two documents:
• bank account details,

Information required: BSB and account number (preferably the account you use to receive tax refund.

• an ATO notice of assessment

Information required: date of issue and reference number

• super account details

Information required: member account details (up to 16 characters), super fund’s Australian Business Number (ABN)

• a dividend statement

Information required: Use a dividend statement from the last two years. You will need your investment reference number.

• a Centrelink payment summary

Use a Centrelink payment summary issued in the last two years to provide your taxable income in whole dollars.

• PAYG payment summary.

This has been replaced by Single Touch Payroll from FY2018-2019 onwards.

Step 3 – Complete your application

Once you have a standard or strong identity strength myGovID, and your documents, from November 2021 you can log in here and apply for your director ID. The application process should take less than 5 minutes.
